A Staged Reading of Spit in Your Face at Barking Legs Theatre
Directed by Joel Sanchez-Avantes, Spit in Your Face is a sharp and provocative
comedy developed through the New Threads Writers Group and New Works Program.
The staged reading represents the next step in the play’s development toward a future
full production.
When Tom Leary, Artistic Director of the San Francisco People’s Theatre,
commits to making his company more inclusive, he hires the brilliant, and
controversial, Mexican director Fernando Calderón to devise a “groundbreaking”
new production guaranteed to shake audiences out of their seats.
Enter Liliana Tzintzún, a young Mexican American costume intern suddenly
thrust into the role of assistant to the director and into the center of a creative
process brimming with ambition, ego, good intentions, and explosive questions.
Witty, provocative, and unflinchingly honest, Spit in Your Face explores questions
of representation, artistic responsibility, cultural identity, and power: Who gets to
tell whose story and at what cost?
As part of New Threads Theatre Company’s New Works Program, the staged reading
will provide an opportunity for audiences to experience the play while it is still in
development. A moderated audience talkback following the reading will invite attendees
to respond to the work and contribute to the ongoing development process.
