Transplanted from NYC to Nashville, tenor saxophonist Evan Cobb is one of the forces pushing jazz forward in Music City. Last year, his quintet did a beautiful job highlighting the music of Art Blakey. We invited him back to interpret the music of pianist and composer Horace Silver. The Steinway will be in the more than able hands of Bruce Dudley, and the rest of Evan's superb working and recording band will be on hand as well. Top shelf classic jazz!

Missy Raines & the New Hip plus
Slim Pickins
Nathan Bell
SAT, June 1 @ 8 pm
$12 adv/$15 door
A beloved figure in bluegrass and a pioneering force in acoustic music, Missy Raines' adventurous musical spirit has always been her compass. Launching her career with experimental bluegrass outfit Cloud Valley, Raines next toured the country with Eddie and Martha Adcock. Soon she was lending her bass skills to the Masters (Adcock, Kenny Baker, Josh Graves and Jesse McReynolds). Raines joined Claire Lynch's popular Front Porch Band, and developed a successful duo with band mate Jim Hurst. Their CDs and live performances pushed the envelope on how much music two people with acoustic instruments could make. A stint with the Brother Boys opened Raines' eyes to the value of spontaneity and immediacy in her musical approach.
Missy Raines is now stepping out to make a longtime dream come true; creating a fusing of bluegrass virtuosity, jazz-tinged groove and a song-driven sensibility with a hot band.
"Missy Raines…probably tops the very short list of superstar bluegrass bassists. She is a seven-time International Bluegrass Music Association Bass Player of the Year, and is one of the few players to have developed a following for her skill on the bass fiddle. Like fellow virtuosos Chris Thile, Mark O'Connor and Alison Brown, Raines decided to allow her skills some genre-blurring freedom." -Free Lance Star
"The New Hip is making some of the greatest music you will ever hear - very innovative and bursting with talent. Although grounded in bluegrass, the New Hip and its players move into a new sphere all their own." -San Diego Troubadour
"The music? Think a jazzier Nickel Creek or a (slightly) feistier Alison Brown." -San Jose Mercury News
Hailing from Chattanooga Tennessee, Slim Pickins is a 5-piece bluegrass band that has been opening eyes and ears across the southeast. Their fast paced, lively shows are reminiscent of the diverse musical influences that the band shares. They combine the talent, instrumentation, and song selection of a New Grass Revival, Doc Watson, or David Grisman with an energy level not seen since the Ramones. It is this combination that pushed the band into recent nominations and subsequent awards from FYI for Best Bluegrass Band and Best Live Band. The band features John Boulware, 2006 Tennessee State Fiddle Champion, leading a group of up and coming hot shots. Slim Pickins music is upbeat, unapologetic, and most importantly fun.
The only problem with having Nathan Bell open your show is the distinct possibility of him stealing the evening.

Faun Fables with Joshua Songs
SUN, June 9 @ 8 pm
$8 at the door
After fifteen years of collaboration, twelve years of touring and six full-length albums, Oakland's FAUN FABLES (Dawn McCarthy and Nils Frykdahl of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) are known for exquisite, visceral adventures in song & theater and riveting live erformances to eclectic and devoted audiences throughout the world. Faun Fables vocals ride through solid, elemental structures of guitars and percussion like Valkyries. All manner of flutes dance through the arrangements. Characters and narration arise at times, occasionally in the form of a full theater show.
Dawn gets singing inspiration from the likes of Catherine Ribeiro, Mariana Sadowska, Lole Montoya, Demis Roussos, Roky Erickson, and now draws much inspiration as a mama witch; tending her two girl children Edda and Ura. Hearth & home life remains an obsession but with Nils and the girls, the gypsy family life has been hers to savor. Dawn is also currently touring with Bonnie Prince Billy in support of their new album.
